Hand Tied Homespun Valentine Garland ~ ❤️Valentine’s Decor❤️ ~ Homespun Craft ~ Noreen’s Kitchen

Here is a super cute homespun holiday garland that is perfect for Valentines day! I made this with strips of torn fabric that I had in my stash of fat quarters along with some ribbon and some thick jute twine. A little time and a little patience and you end up with a beautiful, fun and festive garland that you can make or any occasion! This is super easy to make and only requires your hands and a pair of scissors. This would also be a fun project to do with the kids!

If you are a crafter and or a quilter and have a stash of fabric or fat quarters than this project is for you! Admit it! You may or may not have more than one bin of fabric waiting to be used. I am a fabric hoarder as well as a paper hoarder and a yarn hoarder. At any given moment I could help 100 people start crafting something! This project is very easy to make and requires only a few supplies.

I started off with a heavy jute twine. I measured the span where I wanted my garland to hang and added about a foot on each end to make a hanging loop. It is best to do this part before you begin constructing your garland. I looped one end then hung the twine where I was going to hang the garland in order to measure for the second loop. It was the perfect way to do it. This way you don’t finish your amazing garland and have it too long or too short!

Then the fun part. Prepping the fabric is easy. I snipped the long end of my fat quarters at 1 inch intervals. Then I tore the strips instead of cutting them. This ensures a very straight strip. My fat quarters were about 1 yard by 8 inches so I cut the torn strips in half. This made my strips approximately 1″ x 4″. For me, this was the perfect length. I used 5 different colors/patterns of fat quarters that coordinated for my theme. I also cut longer lengths of for different colors of 1/2 inch satin ribbon. I cut the ribbon at approximately 6 inch lengths. Some of them were varied because I did not want to be to precise for the ribbon. I wanted them to make the garland look a bit like fireworks.

Now that all of our strips of fabric and ribbon are prepped, it’s time to put this all together! It is as simple as doing a shoestring knot of fabric strip around the jute twine. Simple! Just keep tying the fabric on in a pleasant order and add a ribbon or two here and there all the way down the length of your twine and you will have a beautiful garland in no time!

You can make yours full or sparse. It’s up to you. I made mine medium because I did not have a ton of fabric, but if I wanted to I could have added a couple more coordinating fat quarters and twisted and bunched the knots closer and made the garland a bit more full and spiral looking. It really is up to you how you choose to finish off your garland.

You can be done when you have used up all your strips or you can add ribbon cascades to each end and even cute ornaments from the craft store to the garland. There is no such thing as too much and you should be the judge of when your garland is perfect for you.

I hope you give making this simple homespun, hand tied garland a try for Valentine’s day or any time! I hope you love it!

Happy crafting!
