Greetings! A couple of weeks ago I did a BBQ Bacon Burger video and in that video I used some caramelized onions on top of our burgers. Since then I have had an overwhelming cry from my viewers to show how to caramelize onions! So here is how I do it.
There is no mystery. Onions, butter, salt and a bit of sugar and the most important ingredient, patience! You cannot rush caramelized onions. You must wait for them to be ready. Rushing the process will yield undesired results such as cooked, limp and pale onions. Never use oil, only butter! You can caramelize to a degree with oil, but with butter you get a much better result. Trust me on this one, these onions are perfect.
Put them on your burger, on a steak, next to a London broil or on top of a Foccacia that has been seasoned with rosemary, thyme and oregano then throw some smooth goat cheese on for good measure. Any leftover onions can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge and used within a week. I make a killer caramelized sweet onion dip that I promise to share with you soon! Be on the lookout for that video as well as the Foccacia!
