Pizza Burger Sliders ~ Leftover Makeover ~ Super Bowl Snack Ideas ~ Noreen’s Kitchen

Today I wanted to share a great idea for game day snacking, kids lunches or just a fun way to do a leftover makeover that you may not have thought about. These pizza burger sliders are inspired by Rick’s childhood lunch lady favorite! He used to love these from this elementary school days and we have recreated them for you using his awesome “Irish” spaghetti meat sauce and some slider buns. I hope this inspires you to look at your leftovers in a different way and maybe even give you some ideas for sharing that are new and fun.

My husband, Rick remembers his “Pizza burgers” as a split hamburger bun topped with a thick meat sauce then topped with melted cheddar cheese. He recalls this being a very popular favorite in his elementary school lunch room. He said that when they would be on the menu everyone would be excited. That you could even go back for seconds and that nearly everyone did. Even though it has been many years since he enjoyed these tasty, open faced sandwiches, we are going to do our best to recreate them for you here.

Since Superbowl is right around the corner I thought this would also be a nice suggestion for your party snacks. These are really easy to put together, you can make a bunch of them all at once and they can be easily made over and over again should your crowd devour them quickly. I have used slide buns which are about half the size of a traditional burger bun. This makes them small enough to enjoy more than one, but not so big that they could be considered a meal unto themselves.

We are using some of Rick’s “Irish” spaghetti sauce. This is a family favorite and a specialty of his in our home. He made spaghetti for dinner a few nights ago in anticipation of making this video for you. I love me a man who can cook! You can find his video on making his sauce here: http://bit.ly/2whEV9o

I compare these “pizza burgers” to an open faced cross between a pizza and a sloppy Joe. You can easily switch out the slider bun for an English muffin or even a slice of toast. You should make these your own. I have also used mozzarella cheese to keep with a more traditional pizza feel, even though Rick remembers cheddar. Again, you should use whatever is your preference. Same goes for the sauce! You can make these with your favorite sauce. Your favorite recipe, or even make them veggie style with no meat. Your choice here!

Constructing these could not be easier! Just lay your buns opened, on a foil or parchment lined baking sheet and top with the thick sauce. I did warm the sauce a bit first. Then we added some mini pepperoni slices along with the shredded cheese and gave a good sprinkle of my homemade pizza seasoning. You can find my pizza seasoning video here: http://bit.ly/2yPdEz2

Bake these in a 350 degree oven for about 10 to 12 minutes. I only heated them until the cheese melted. If you prefer to broil yours, then feel free, but be sure to keep a very close eye on them because they can burn very fast if not monitored. When done, simply serve and enjoy!

These would be great for a kids party and have them build their own with toppings of their choice. These are definitely going to be a crowd pleaser and not only can you adapt these to be party food or a quick lunch for your kids, these can easily be turned into a main course for a family meal with the addition of a nice big salad, a la Elaine Benes! Seinfeld fans know what I am talking about.

I hope this gives you a fun ideas of how you can use pasta sauce in a new leftover makeover and wow your friends and family for your next party, game day gathering or even just a family meal. I hope you give these pizza burger sliders a try and I hope you love them!

Happy Eating!
